Reinventing Digital News: How Bliss Helped Build the New SAPO Mobile App

Press Releases

When a brand with three decades of history decides to reinvent itself for the future, it’s not just an upgrade — it’s a transformation. That’s precisely what happened with SAPO, one of Portugal’s most iconic digital media brands, which has just launched its brand-new mobile app for iOS and Android. Bliss had the privilege of leading the design and development of this project, working closely with SAPO and its partners to create a mobile-first experience powered by Generative AI.

A new digital experience for a new era

The new SAPO app brings together everything users loved about the previous “SAPO” and “SAPO Jornais” apps into one unified platform. But this is much more than a merger — it’s a complete reimagining of how people consume information on the go. With a fresh design aligned with SAPO’s new branding, the app feels modern, intuitive, and personal, offering users the freedom to access news and content wherever they are, in the way that suits them best.

Personalized, intelligent, and human

One of the standout features of the app is its use of machine learning and generative AI. From the moment users start interacting, the app begins learning their preferences and curating content just for them. A dynamic “For Me” feed evolves throughout the day with personalized recommendations. Articles can be transformed into smart summaries, either in text or audio, and even read aloud by avatars with customizable voices. Notifications are no longer generic alerts but tailored updates that reflect each user’s interests and behavior.

This level of personalization means that news consumption feels less like scrolling through a feed and more like having a thoughtful assistant filter the world’s information just for you.

News on the move

The SAPO app was also built with mobility in mind. With full integration into CarPlay and Android Auto, users can listen to news summaries, highlights, and opinion articles directly in their cars. It’s an entirely new way of keeping up with what matters while on the road — hands-free, seamless, and safe.

Designed for usability, built for performance

Bliss’s role in this project spanned the entire digital product journey, encompassing functional analysis, UX/UI design, mobile development in Swift and Kotlin, backend engineering, and quality assurance. The result is a smooth, consistent, and engaging app experience that runs natively across iOS and Android.

Collaboration at the core

This whole project was truly a collaborative effort. While Bliss took the lead on design and development, Wynova brought deep expertise in artificial intelligence, powering the personalization and summarization features. WYcreative shaped the new SAPO brand identity, ensuring the app visually aligned with SAPO’s new positioning, and Nervo created the brand’s new mascot. This physical and emotional touchpoint makes SAPO feel even more approachable and human.

The future of information, today

SAPO’s new mobile app is more than just another digital product launch. It represents the next step in how people access reliable, high-quality news in their daily lives — smarter, more personal, and more accessible than ever before.

At Bliss, we’re proud to have played a part in this transformation. Together with SAPO and our partners, we’ve built not just an app, but a new chapter in digital media — one that’s ready for the next generation of readers.
